Music

SHA student playing violinThe Music Department is very proud of its varied offerings at all levels and in all facets of music.  Our larger performing ensembles are offered as classes during the school day: Chorus I (9th grade), Chorus II (10th-12th grade), Orchestra, and Concert Band.  Students in these classes also attend a small group lesson once a cycle.  After school, we offer several extracurricular ensembles: Chamber Ensemble, Chamber Chorus, SHAcappella, and Pop Rock band.  In conjunction with Campus Ministry, the Praise and Worship group is another extracurricular group that provides music at all of our school liturgies.  Each year we produce a Spring Musical that not only features our students on stage, but in the Pit Band, and on the Tech and Costume crews.  Our student musicians regularly participate in NYSSMA, All-County, and LISFA, and in the last few years we have had students selected for All-State and All-Eastern as well.

Not only do we have all of these performing opportunities, but we also offer a selection of music theory, history, and appreciation courses: General Music 9, Music Theory I, Music Theory II Honors, AP Music Theory, and the History of Music and Musical Theatre (which has an SJU credit option).  Students are able to take theory courses in addition to their performing ensembles if they wish to.  The Music Rooms were renovated for the 2022-23 school year, so our students are now working in brand new rooms with appropriate acoustic treatment, lighting, and storage.

We truly have something to offer everyone in the Music Department at SHA, so please feel free to get in touch with Ms. Shirreffs at [email protected] if you are interested in our program.
