Social Studies Competitions
Students in Government Day
Students in Government Day, is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead (TOH). By working through a mock weather emergency, students learn how closely all town departments have to work together in order to best service the residents in an emergency. The scenario often features a hurricane headed straight for Long Island. Students interact in various roles to protect the safety and well-being of town residents in the midst of the weather crisis. The TOH department heads guide them throughout the day.

Euro Challenge
This competition gives students the opportunity to step into the shoes of diplomats and economic policymakers by examining real world economic issues. Teams of 3-5 select one euro area country, examine an economic problem and make a 15 minute presentation. They also recommend appropriate policy solutions to a distinguished panel of judges.

World Language Competitions
The National Spanish Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese
The National Italian Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Italian
The National French Contest, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French
The competitions are open to all students on their respective level in whichever of the three languages she has chosen to study. The exams test student ability in reading, listening, vocabulary and structure. Varying by level of student, Sacred Heart Academy has had winners in all categories (Honorable Mention, Bronze, Silver and Gold) for each of the three languages we offer (as was likewise the case for the National Latin Exam). All of the members of our department encourage the girls to accept the challenge of participating in these contests, not only because so many do so well, but because taking the exam itself is yet another opportunity to practice and grow more proficient in the new language.
