Career Day

Friday, April 15, 2016

Over 25 alumnae participated in a day that inspired us all. Career Day at Sacred Heart Academy provides alumnae with the opportunity to have a positive impact on the young women who will follow in their footsteps. Nothing quite compares to the genuine connection that exists between alumnae and SHA students. Their efforts will inspire our young woman to learn, to connect with others, to never give up and to find the path that best suits their gifts and talents so that they may lead with heart.

SHA Dinner Dance

Friday, March 18, 2016, 7:00 p.m.
The Garden City Hotel

At the SHA Dinner Dance on Friday, March 18th, we honoured extraordinary alum for the differences they have made in their professions, in their communities and in the world. We paid tribute to Mary Ellen Duffy, '89; Victoria Hall Gmelich, '87; and Leona O'Brien Velazquez '90, P '16. These alum have taken the lead in their professional lives and just as importantly, in service: as ministers to those in spiritual and physical need and as advocates for Catholic education.

Each alum stood confidently at the podium at The Garden City Hotel as they humbly gave thanks to their family, to God and to Sacred Heart Academy for providing the foundation for their successes.

We invite you to read our honorees bios and to click on the links below to learn how Sacred Heart Academy impacted their lives.
Mary Ellen Duffy '89: "...of all the things that my parents did for me that gave me the foundation to be successful in life was to send me to Sacred Heart Academy. Everyone I know who has been educated at Sacred Heart Academy is a success."

Victoria Hall Gmelich '87: "All of these experiences, both good and bad, made me who I am. What made me able to achieve and enjoy the good things and endure and withstand the bad things was an underline faith and confidence in my very being. I believe that began and solidified itself in me during my years at Sacred Heart."

Leona O'Brien Velazquez '90: "Girls that leave here will succeed in academics, but you get something more..."

2015 SHA Dinner Dance
Three outstanding alumnae were honored at the 2015 SHA Dinner Dance on Friday, March 20. Noreen O’Keefe Costello ’70, Danielle DiBari ’98, and Karen Danca Smith ’91 are true leaders in their professions and their faith. They are proof that a single sex education can empower women to be the best that they can be and that a Catholic education provides moral and social understanding that remains with our students throughout their lives. They have the courage to lead with heart, they are committed to making a difference in the world, and their compassion is evident not only in their personal lives but in their professions serving people as city counsel, as pharmacist and as teacher. S. Jeanne Ross presided over the Dinner Dance for the final time before leaving SHA for sabbatical and she was thanked for her many contributions to SHA over the last 18 years and she was serenaded by seniors and alumnae with the school song. We give special thanks to our Dinner Dance Committee, chaired by Maria and James Corcoran P ’09, ’15. Everything from the amazing and clever auction items to table seating and event support was done by committee members. Regular meetings at SHA gave us the opportunity to connect with these families who give their time so generously and encourage others to do the same. Our community is vibrant, strong and committed. When we are in each other’s presence, the energy is unmatched.
Annual Golf Outing 2014

An amazing $30,000 was raised at this year’s Annual Golf & Tennis Outing, held on Monday, May 12th, at the beautiful Hempstead Golf & Country Club. The weather was perfect as 22 tennis players took to the courts and 80 golfers enjoyed a round. The evening culminated with a delicious BBQ, raffles, and a robust live auction.

Special thanks to the Golf & Tennis Committee members, Golf co-chaired by Joe Finnerty P ’14 and Bob Tolan P ’14 (both off to the 19th hole), and Tennis chair Terry Terrana P ’15, ’17, who work tirelessly to make the day a success.
