Sacred Heart Academy marked the beginning of the 2017-18 school year with its Opening Liturgy, celebrating the Mass of the Holy Spirit, on Thursday, September 7. Alumna and acclaimed Catholic scholar, Dr. Phyllis Zagano ’65, was presented with the Justice and Peace tribute for taking the lead in her professional life as a social justice advocate. Dr. Zagano is widely published on the subject of women's roles in the Catholic Church and, in 2016, she was appointed by Pope Francis to serve on the Vatican commission for the Study of the Female Diaconate.
In her remarks, Dr. Zagano spoke of the value of respect, sharing how her colleagues on the Commission gather from around the world and work hard, together, and with open minds. “You need to get along, you need to respect each other,” she told the Sacred Heart students. “We’re all in this together.”
“I hope and pray that you will be able to make the positive choices that bring peace and bring justice to our troubled world in whatever way you can, no matter the consequences,” Dr. Zagano added in closing. “Because the world needs you.”
Today’s Liturgy also included the installation of 24 new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Two faculty members and 22 SHA students completed the preparation workshops given by the Office of Worship of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and were blessed before serving at today’s Mass.
