Kaylin Spinelli ‘22
Article by Kaylin Spinelli ‘22, Accepted for Publication in Austin-Based Academic Journal
Kaylin Spinelli ‘22

Recent SHA alumna Kaylin Spinelli’s article, “ Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Sleep Quality during the COVID-19 Outbreak in Adolescents & Parents: A Web-Based Cross-Sectional Survey,” has been accepted for publication by The Journal of Research: High School  (JRHS).

The Journal of Research: High School, a Texas-based, peer-reviewed academic journal for the nation's best secondary research will publish Kaylin’s Sacred Heart Academy senior thesis in its Spring/Summer 2023 edition.

Ms. Spinelli surveyed both front-line workers and their adolescent children about their pandemic and pre-pandemic experiences. She employed varied and sophisticated statistical approaches to analyze her data.  A brief summary of "Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Sleep Quality…" follows: “The present study found evidence that essential workers and their families are at an increased risk for anxiety, stress and sleep disruption. 160 female adolescents and 75 of their parents completed surveys measuring anxiety and sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. The two samples, although drawn from the same community, were not linked. All adolescents attend an all-girls academy in suburban New York. T-tests and regression analyses suggest that essential workers and their families are at elevated risk for mental illness.”

Kaylin Spinelli ‘22

The appearance of Kaylin’s work in a scholarly journal is Sacred Heart Academy's twelfth such accomplishment in 36 months - in five different publications.

 Emma Brown '20

Emma Brown ‘20
Emma Brown ‘20 has taken the lessons of leadership and service that she learned at SHA and applied them to life at Marquette University.
While navigating life as a first year college student during a pandemic, Emma found joy in getting involved in Marquette’s chapter of Camp Kesem. Having learned about the camp through her older brother, then a senior at Marquette, Emma was excited to get involved in Kesem, a camp that serves children who are coping with parents who have cancer. One of 130 nationwide chapters, Marquette students help run a week-long sleep away camp. Students fundraise throughout the year so that campers can enjoy camp free of charge. Campers are often forced to grow up quickly, the goal of Camp Kesem is to provide children a place where they can just be kids.

Counselors stay connected with campers all year through virtual chats and birthday celebrations. The camp includes student volunteers, health care professionals: two nurses and a mental health professional, and other volunteers. Emma is a nursing major and is applying what she’s learning in class and clinics to life at camp!

Camp Kesem is a special place for a number of reasons, including that campers and counselors get to choose their camp name! This gives the campers the opportunity to be whoever they want to be at camp. Emma’s name is Ones. While growing up playing soccer, Emma was #11 and her pop always called her “Ones!” What a fitting tribute to be connected to her own family while serving others.

Emma started as a student volunteer, became the operations coordinator her sophomore year and is now the co-director as a junior. This position will carry on through her senior year. Emma credits her leadership skills to what she learned at  SHA. Time management, interpersonal skills and organization are qualities she developed at SHA and are helping her take on more responsibilities with her work for Camp Kesem and her school work at Marquette.
Emma is a beautiful example of an alumna who #takesthelead and #leadswithheart.

my mothers working hands

My Mother's Working Hands tells the story of my mother's hands and the hard work behind them. It is a mixed media collage with the hands illustrated with pencil.  The piece was inspired by my mother, Evangeline Bautista, who was a front-line worker during the pandemic devoting her time to taking care of COVID patients.  I created this work to tell the story of grit and resilience through her experiences as an immigrant who came from The Philippines to become a nurse in the U.S.  It was not until the pandemic hit that I was able to fully understand the true courage, sacrifices, and significance behind her hands.  The piece serves an homage to not only my mother but all front-line workers who are heroes inside and outside the home.
