Kayla Palumbo '24 Soars at the Regional JSHS Symposium

Kayla Palumbo '24 Soars at the Regional JSHS Symposium

After an intense day of presentations to, and questioning by local area professors and industry professionals, sixteen young Long Island researchers have been invited to return to York College-CUNY to compete for five "golden tickets" to the National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium in Albuquerque, NM June 1-4. Sacred Heart senior Kayla Palumbo is among those Fab Five.

Her outstanding research ("Can Modern Blue Light-Blocking Technology Effectively Shield Drosophila Melanogaster from Harm?") and remarkable poise under intense pressure won the day. It's no wonder that the Cornell-bound senior is a role model for the younger research girls.

Here's what the Symposium Director had to say:

Hello Kayla,

I would like to congratulate you for your outstanding presentation on Sunday, February 11, 2024 during the JSHS 2024 regional semifinal symposium. On behalf of the judges and the organizing committee, I would like to invite you to present your research, "Can Modern Blue Light-Blocking Technology Effectively Shield Drosophila Melanogaster from Harm?", on Saturday February 24, 2024 at the JSHS 2024 regional final symposium. The Metro/LI-JSHS 2024 regional final symposium will take place on Saturday, February 24 2024, 8am-3pm on York College campus in Jamaica Queens. The regional symposium will start with in person registration at 8am. Presentations will start soon thereafter. At the end of the final symposium, Long Island's 5 regional delegates to the national JSHS symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico will be selected. The presentations at the JSHS 2024 regional final will follow the same rules as in the regional semifinal symposium.

Best regards, be well and be safe,
