Deans, full-time teachers who assume responsibility for the discipline of all students on one academic level, also work closely with each student. Though never an end in itself, good discipline functions as a means to more important ends – in this case the creation of a safe, supportive and affirming academic atmosphere. It is this responsibility of the dean to inculcate the spirit which will foster in the student a sense of self-discipline and of personal responsibility toward the other members of the community. Both the counselor and the dean work closely together to foster this atmosphere.
